Relocating a Massasauga Rattlesnake
Look who showed up on our property the other day. We see quite a few snakes in Muskoka but it is always extra exciting to come across at Massasauga Rattlesnake. This guy was pretty docile but he did make quite the noise with his tail.
Because Massasauga rattlesnakes are a threatened and soon to be endangered species we thought it would be best to relocate him so that nobody got into any trouble (we have young kids and a dog on the property). Contrary to many fears that people have, humans are not on the diet for most snakes. If you leave them alone they will leave you alone.
Humans are the number one threat to the Massasauga Rattlesnake species so we took extra care to do some research on how and where to relocate it. We learned through our research that rattlesnakes are very loyal to their landscape and it you move it to an unfamiliar location that it will very likely die. All the research we did suggested that we move it no more than 250 metres away. So that’s what we did. We moved it deeper into the forest away from the road and our house.
Trust us, we’re not snake handlers (or snake lovers for that matter) so this was no easy task for us. But we wanted to do what’s best. We used a large garbage can, a long handled broom, wore long clothing and boots.
Glad to say, there was no drama to report. Everything went exactly as it was supposed to.
